The funny thing about life, is it all just sort of happens, and man can it hit you. For the most part, we have very little say in it. We can’t change the weather, or the past, or the opinions of others. We can’t control a lot of things. What we can control, is our input and output. We decide on the reactions we have to the things that occur around us. Being in control of your thought patterns is the only way to truly win at life.
This is not to say we’re always going to be in a jumping state of joy, or that our entire emotional spectrum can be moulded like play-doh and altered at will. It just means we can develop better coping mechanisms and adopt ways of re-directing harmful thought patterns in order to feel happiness. In order to experience life in a way that makes us ever grateful for it. Mental reminders help us to stay on the right track.
Whether you’re dealing with overwhelming stress, deep sadness, anxiety, irritability, guilt, or any other negative state of mind you can think of, the steps to acceptance, peace and happiness remain the same. The reason this is so important, is because life is entirely wasted if we can’t enjoy and appreciate it, and bring joy to others in the process.
Mental reminders Nº1
You have to stay present
When we keep our thoughts and focus on what’s happening in the here and now, it’s easier to deal with things. Though we can’t deny the approaching of deadlines and events, we can leave them where they are, in order to deal with the current moment. It’s like building a house one brick at a time. If you’re laying the first brick and start to think about the entire house ahead of you, the weeks of intensive labour and all the details you need to arrange in order for the house to be ready for occupancy, it’s going be a stressful and draining experience.
There’s no denying you need to build a house, but can we do it one brick at a time please?
That’s the mental reminder you should replay in your head. A fairly simple but powerful question to ask yourself each time your brain tries to carry you away on a tsunami of overwhelming thoughts that live in either the past that has gone, or the future that has not yet come.
Mental reminders Nº2
Memories are meaningful, but happiness lies in the way you approach them
So you have this memory, or collection of memories of a certain time in your life. These particular memories are painful to revisit. Perhaps you miss someone, have a traumatic event that seems to haunt you, or simply feel pangs of nostalgia that have never left. Each time you’ve gone back to that place, it’s been a negative experience that has left you feeling gloomy in your current life.
Denial is often used as a coping mechanism, but it’s barely a bandaid, and will actually make matters worse in the long run. Even if it hurts, you need to know where you’ve come from in order to know where you’re going. The trick is not to avoid the past, but to accept it. What happened could have been better, but it also could have been worse. Instead of focusing on the negative aspects, try to determine what lessons you learned. You are wiser now from it, and that’s one good thing. It just so happens that nobody was gifted a perfect life, but to those with the right approach, it sure can feel like it.
I am so grateful for what I have now, and for the awesome moments I’ve been lucky to be a part of.
Mental reminders Nº3
Notice your reactions, and edit them if they don’t serve you
Your reactions define who you are. Everything on this planet reacts. From the smallest atom to the largest molecule and everything that is made up of them. There are some reactions that nature intended for, and we can’t change them all. However, we do have the ability to control how we move forward from any given event. Take the leadership approach, even if just internally as a personal affirmation. Being a leader to yourself, and to others, will always leave you on top.
Anyone can be a leader, it’s all about your mindset. As a leader, you’ll know what is necessary. As a leader, you will remain calm and collected in times of chaos. As a leader, you will take control and use your initiative to the best of your capabilities. Leaders breathe deeply, think clearly, and act rationally.
I am my own leader.
When dealing with difficult individuals, as many leaders often do, there are three key phrases that will help you keep it together:
Patience is a virtue.
Understanding is powerful.
Compassion is mighty.
