When spiritualism meets materialism; the best is in both worlds

“Money can’t buy happiness”

“Materialistic things don’t matter”

“You can’t take it with you when you’re gone”

Have you ever heard any of these sayings, or similar versions of them? Endless quotes and phrases, all highlighting how ultimately pointless and unimportant materialism is in the grand scale of things. Not entirely wrong, but also not entirely right. It’s healthy not to get carried away in either direction. What a lot of spiritual leaders fail to convey, is that the issue never was with materialistic items, but instead with the obsession of them. To quote another famous quotation: It’s not money that is the “root of all evil” – it’s the love of money that is the problem.

Just because you want nice things in life, doesn’t mean you are any less balanced than someone who wants nothing. As long as the core of your peace and happiness is not dependent on the achievement of riches, there is no issue working towards gaining them. The only issue, ever, is when it starts taking over your life. This is where that great quote is so relevant, wise words that have been repeated over time and fine-tuned, from the mouths of famous celebrities who have lived in both worlds.

Materialism isn’t such fun

materialismAs many people have testified that have risen to fame and fortune, it’s not all it’s cracked up to be. The truth is that money, things, fame and power, are not the main ingredients to a successful life, despite what society tells us. Most celebrities start seeking out religion and spirituality after they have been in the spotlight for a while. Being constantly surrounded by greed, materialism and money, causes the imbalance to become so distinct, that they often go full guru-getaway and change out their entire belief system. It’s often quite drastic, but nonetheless a predictable outcome.

Balance spirituality and materialism

materialismAs with any and all things in nature, in love, and in leading a holistic lifestyle, it is always going to be balance which holds the key that unlocks the fundamentals of happiness: Health, Peace & Joy. Being extreme in any direction, whether religious, spiritual or money hungry, will pivot you towards discontent. In the same way that we need to balance work and social for a good life, we also must balance spirituality and materialism. We can’t live solely from a connection with a greater power such as God, for we live in a physical world. Similarly, we can’t expect to feel fulfilled when consumed with only the physical aspects, because there is more to us than what is tangible.

If you’re ever in doubt about your morality, with all the conflicting religions, spiritual practices, long-winded scriptures and society’s own idea of perfection, you needn’t worry. Life really is simple if you let it be. All you need to have to stay grounded and heading in the right direction, is an open line of communication with your inner self. Your senses, moral compass and strength all come from within. If you listen to your gut and remain honest with yourself, you will never need to take a guru-getaway to feel purpose, or purchase the latest and greatest to feel important.
