Good Eating Habits for Students

A lot of students are ignorant that there is actually something called ‘good eating habits for students’. Most students just feel they need to eat and just take food as it comes their way. The aim of this post is to enlighten people about the good eating habits for students, so they can get to take food as it is required for them.

We know that when it is the time to study, the brain and energy level has to be 100% so you can perform with all your ability; and eating habits is a major factor in this. Eating a healthy diet can help provide students with the vitamins and minerals their bodies need to stay active, improve mental focus, and even stabilize their moods. To develop good eating habits for students, some strategies have to be put in place towards educating children on the many benefits of eating well and I implore parents to work on that aspect well.

Below I have compiled some good eating habits for students to follow :

  1. Have breakfast every day: Breakfast is the first and the most important meal of the day that keeps students active through the day’s activities. It should never be skipped. Breakfast will give you the energy to face classes, homework and activities outside of school. A good breakfast will keep your energy levels high and improve your performance at school. Breakfast is very important to reduce fatigue, stress and feelings of hunger.
  2. Add fruits to your diet: Fruits are one of nature’s numerous wonderful gift to mankind; indeed, they are life-enhancing medicines filled with healthy natural deposits of vitamins, water, nutrients and other helpful elements. The nutrients in fruit are vital for health and maintenance of your body. Research studies suggest that it is advisable one eat fruit daily.
  3. Drink plenty of water: I encourage students to drink plenty of water. About 60-70% of your body is made up of water and any reduction in your body’s cells and nerves prevents it from functioning properly. To remind yourself, carry a water bottle along to class and keep it handy during late night study sessions. Intake of too much sweetened drinks and sodas can increase the risk of obesity in children.
  4. If you must take snacks, be wise: Fast foods are types of food that can save you time and money, but sincerely they can be a hindrance to healthy eating habits for students. Continuous snacking may lead to overeating, but snacks that are planned at specific times during the day can be part of a nutritious diet, without spoiling a student’s appetite at meal times.
  5. Eat plenty of foods rich in calcium. People in their early twenties need to build up a lot of calcium in their bodies to prevent osteoporosis later in life. As we know, calcium is essential for all kinds of things like blood clotting, muscle and nerve function, healthy teeth and strong bones. In fact, you keep building up bone mass until you reach about 30 years of age, then it gets difficult to add calcium to bone. So take advantage of this time and get plenty of calcium every day. Well-known calcium sources are milk, cheese, dark leafy green vegetables, nuts and seeds, and cow’s milk alternatives like soy milk, rice milk, or almond milk. You need about three servings of calcium-rich foods every day.
  6. Physical Activity and Exercise. I encourage students to try to get involved in a sport in school. At least an hour of physical activity every day is recommended for school children. This will work up a healthy appetite and also keep you active and fit.
  7. Take balanced diet. A balanced diet combines carbohydrates, protein, and a little fat and not only provides you with the nutrients you need to stay healthy but also helps to keep your energy levels up. If you are used to consuming lots of milk products, whole grains, fruit and veggies, and lower fat protein-rich foods, then you could think about enjoying a candy bar or a couple of cookies to complement.
