The Four Pillars of Balance: optimise your energy levels

The Four Pillars of Balance: To encourage and optimise physical energy we need to incorporate these four simple rules into our daily lives in order to create harmony and equilibrium for a healthier life.

In order to create a balance in life and feel as though we are capable of achieving life’s chores, whatever they happen to be, and complete each day with efficiency we need to optimise our physical energy. We have it, we are all provided with it naturally, yet often (in fact more often than not), we do not utilise it to the best of our ability.

There are four pillars of balance which can greatly assist us to build and renew our energy throughout the day. A simple, daily routine which embraces moving, standing, resting and sleeping is how we can achieve this. These four simple needs are what is required, from an holistic viewpoint, to balance and allow our bodies to work harmoniously and effectively.

The cells in our body cannot speak to us directly, however our body does give us plenty of signals which indicate what we need; we just need to learn how to firstly notice them, secondly decipher them, then harness and take action to do what is required.

Find a balance between rest and activity

balance

We need to make sure we move as well and rest. If you have a job which entails being seated for long periods of time you must initiate movement for at least ten minutes each hour. You must stand, and quite simply, move around.

This doesn’t have to involve rigorous or strenuous exercise, just movement. Make your body work and move; you will quickly notice that this will make you feel re-energised. This can be difficult in some situations, but not impossible. Take a toilet break and walk around, have a stretch, run up and down some stairs, for example.

Our bodies were designed to move, if we rest too much our blood is not circulating efficiently. Total bed rest can begin to destroy muscle tone in a matter of days. There was a study done with top American athletes who rested for a total of two weeks and lost three years worth of muscle tone.

These days modern science can fix your hip or your knee to be as good as new (or better in fact), but as soon as you come around from surgery the doctors will encourage you to get up and move around as soon as you possibly can, this is to keep the muscles working, retain their form and therefore ability.

Achieve proper sleep patterns

balance

Just grabbing a few hours when you can is not healthy; we need regular, uninterrupted sleep for at least seven or eight hours per night. We are somewhat of a mystery when it comes to the fact that for hours each day we literally become unconscious. However, this mystery is what makes us regenerate and rejuvenate, giving our body and mind time to recuperate and allow us to again optimise our physical energy for the new day.

We also know that lack of sleep can be extremely detrimental to our health, it can cause us to be overweight, suffer from depression and incur infection. While we sleep our body dispels toxins and so sleep is also a biologically purifying tonic. If you don’t get a good sleep you can physically and mentally feel the strain during the day when attempting regular activities which would otherwise be easy for you. You will experience dullness and fatigue and be incapable of finding sufficient energy to complete your daily tasks comfortably.

We must create a calm and tranquil environment in which to achieve this necessary slumber. Make sure your room is cool, enough that you need a cover, make sure you have fresh air, total quiet or calming noise, and not much light except natural morning light.

Meditation during moments in the day when you are at rest is far more beneficial to your health than watching a television, or even reading. You mind is also grateful for some peace and so taking a break is good for your mental as well as physical health.

So the balance between these four pillars; resting, moving, sleeping and standing is paramount in creating equilibrium and optimising your physical energy in order for you to be the best you! Try focussing on this, whilst listening to your body’s needs and feel the energy flow.
