When your balance is just not right there is a therapy out there which, by manipulating your muscles, can detect and correct the causes of these imbalances.
Our bodies are intricate, complex systems which generally attempt to heal themselves, however when self-healing isn’t possible how do we determine what the issue is?
For a common language, with which to recognise the signs, there is kinesiology.
The term kinesiology, derived from the Greek word ‘kinēsis’ meaning movement, relates to the study of motion, or more specifically the way in which our muscles coordinate in order to manoeuvre the body.
The holistic study of kinesiology, as used in the natural therapy field, concentrates on the muscles as being signal bearers indicating any imbalances apparent within the body. The therapy is based on the idea that there are flows of energy within the body that relate not only to the muscles but to every tissue and organ that go to make the body a living, feeling being.
When there are blockages or stresses preventing smooth energy flow, in turn affecting smooth functioning of our bio-systems, there are under-energies or over-energies. Both can add up to stresses that can eventually overwhelm the body’s compensatory mechanisms and may result in physical pains, mental discomfort or disease: allergies, depression, postural problems, poor performance levels, learning and relationship difficulties, digestive and nervous disorders. Whatever the presenting problem, the system is saying it is malfunctioning.
These energy flows can be evaluated by testing the function of the muscles, which in turn reflect the body’s overall state of structural chemical, or emotional balance. Kinesiology uses muscle testing in order to identify where the imbalances in the body’s structural, chemical, emotional or other energy happen to be. It can establish the body’s priority healing needs, evaluating energy changes brought about by a broad spectrum of both manual and non-manual therapeutic procedures. It is a way to tap in to one of the body’s biofeedback mechanisms.
The combination of traditional eastern and modern western medical techniques makes kinesiology one of the most comprehensive and holistic of the modern natural therapies. The integration of both traditions allows a patient to assess and improve their health in all areas.
A kinesiologist will first go through your mental and physical health history in order to determine any underlying or pre-existing issues. In addition to this your general life patterns will be addressed; work, leisure, diet, relationships, traumas, finances, spirituality, exercise, etc. This will provide them with a set of guidelines or ‘roadmap’ if you like, to be able to assess your current condition. From this point the correct therapy will be administered.
Cause & Effect
We are all familiar with orthodox western style medicine, which tends to treat the symptoms of disease. The holistic approach is to find and treat the root cause of the problem by bringing the body back into balance. Rather than just get a headache and self-administer a tablet, a natural holistic therapist would search for the root cause of these regular headaches, and treat this rather than the headache itself. Holistic therapies and in this case kinesiologists will aim to find the cause of any physical or mental imbalance, not just treat the effect.
Kinesiology encompasses a breadth of therapeutic aids but the real goal of any ‘balance’ is to identify the bottom-line cause of this malfunction and then to resolve it. It might be nutritional, emotional, structural, electrical or even spiritual – something as simple as an “attitude” or a forgotten memory.
The essential tool upon which Kinesiology relies is the muscle feedback system, a handy piece of human wiring that gives instant access into the holistic information held by the core operating unit of the entire body-mind system – the subconscious brain.
Examples of the benefits of Kinesiology
- Enhanced learning abilities
- Improved sports performance
- Eliminating emotional, physical and mental stress
- Assisting with decision-making
- Overcoming past trauma
- Identifying nutritional excess or deficiency
- Aiding in muscle injury healing
- Releasing fears and phobias
- Staying well
For Children
Kinesiology is used to help with learning difficulties, dyslexia, co-ordination problems, hyperactivity and aggressive behaviour, to name but a few.
For Pain
Many kinesiology techniques are particularly beneficial for pain relief. Energy flows continuously around our bodies, 24 hours a day, and blockages may occur for all sorts of reasons. If not released, these blockages can lead to more serious illnesses. Kinesiology is suitable for all age groups.
For Stress
Stress is part of our lives, the ability to handle stress varies from person to person. If stress is not handled correctly, it can lock into the body and can cause physical symptoms at a later stage. Kinesiology techniques can be used to identify and deal effectively with all types of stress and emotional problems. It can be used to confirm the cause of stress and to release it, enabling the person to deal with the problem objectively.
For Nutrition
Modern living is inherently and unfortunately unhealthy. Food contains pesticides, flavourings, preservatives and colourings. Continued ingestion of these chemicals undoubtedly leads to health problems. Our bodies can in fact become toxic. Nutritional problems may relate also to imbalance, where an individual diet does not contain sufficient nutrients or vitamins to remain healthy.
Kinesiology techniques can be used to help identify specific nutritional weaknesses and sensitivities in the body and to detox the body using herbs, homeopathy, flower and gem essences, colour and sound.
Nutrition does not always mean giving something extra, sometimes it means taking something away, for example any food that the person is allergic to.
For body structure
Kinesiology techniques have helped many people with body structure problems to become completely well again. Using the principle of balancing, a complete range of muscles are tested and corrected. In addition to improvements in general posture, relevant meridians are also vitalised. One of the most common contributing factors to structural problems is bad posture, where the person assumes an unnatural position and so puts strain on the entire structural system. Fixing the muscles involved, and thus correcting the posture, means balance is restored again.
My two cents
I believe we need to focus, as do the Chinese (medically), on being well and staying well, as opposed to diagnosing and treating problems. If this is the direction you take it is far simpler to recognise when something does happen to be off balance. Kinesiology is an interesting way to go about locating and treating any issue that may arise whether it be physical, spiritual or subconscious.
