Hair Transplant: How long does it take to see hair growth once the surgery is complete?

Hair transplant is one of the hardest decision for any person to make. The major concern of hair transplant surgery is that how long will it take to see the re-growth of hairs. What is the Hair growth Cycle after the transplant?

  • Day 1 to 10

The most critical part after the surgery is the first two weeks. For a few days, the patient will have swelling and redness on the scalp where the incisions are made. The redness will remain for at least 2 weeks. You should avoid itching and don’t use any product which is not recommended by the physician. After one week, swelling and redness will be gone completely. Then you will notice a crust is formed where the hair follicles are transplanted. It is basically when the skin is drying out. You can remove it by rubbing it gently. On the 10th day, the crusting will be gone. The transplanted hairs will look like a ‘crew-cut’ haircut.

  • Week 2 – 3

After this, you will notice shedding of hairs. You don’t have to worry as it a part of the healing process and it is very normal.

  • End of Month 1

This is basically the resting stage for the hairs. The length of this phase may vary for every patient before they start noticing the hair growth. At this point, the patient hair will look exactly the same as prior to the surgery.

  • Month 2 – 4

Once the resting phase is complete the new hairs will start growing. The new hairs will be very thin as they emerge from the scalp.   • Month 6

At 6th month your hairs have entered the anagen phase and finally, you can see the progress. At this point, you have to visit your doctor for follow up.

  • Month 6 – 9

Now the patient can a large number of noticeable hairs on the scalp. They are very thin and they will be over 3 inches. By the end of this phase, you can also notice the change in texture and they are thicker. At this time, the donor area is completely healed.

  • 1 year

At this stage, the patients have achieved 80% of hair growth and the hairs have completely emerged from the scalp. After one year, the hairs will grow will full thickness and density.
