The power of the mind
Our minds are the most powerful part of us, they control everything we do and feel. Without our brain we cannot think nor move, understand nor function. We are literally what our minds are. We are what we believe. We are what we think. And we are what we do. Our actions define us. To be of sound mind is to be healthy and is key to overall personal wellness.
Philosophers such as Plato, Locke, Aristotle, Hume, marked the way for thinkers since ancient times, studying and seeking to understand fundamental truths about themselves, the world in which they lived, and their relationships to the world and to each other. They asked and investigated general and fundamental questions about existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language. To know and to find our own truth in whatever we search for is to be free and conscious. We may take our consciousness for granted and neglect to appreciate it, but we must recognise that it is a fundamental part of us and who we choose to be.
To be healthy naturally is to find your balance. One must have a healthy mind and so plenty of restful, preferably uninterrupted, sleep and minimal amount of stress contribute to our ability to concentrate and feel capable. Our bodies need exercise, as do our minds. An inactive mind becomes stagnant and unable to utilise its power and full potential. We therefore become stale in our actions and often unwell as a result. It is overwhelming just how much power our mind can have over our existence.
Hundreds of thousands of people worldwide have to use medication to keep their minds balanced and thoughts rational, to maintain some level of normality in their life. The difficulty suffered by such people is real and powerful and a lot of it is conjured by their own minds. Despite that, it is impossible for some to be able to combat it alone. This proof of how powerful our minds are is incredible as it shows that even we can be controlled by thoughts we don’t even wish to be having. And they are our own! It doesn’t sound reasonable, but sometimes reason gets lost.
The power of thought
There are many mental illnesses which are purely controlled by our thoughts, this can be contributed to by a chemical imbalance within our genetic make up, however some cases can be totally eradicated using only the power of the mind.
Theory of positivity: The idea that positive thought can actually affect the chemistry surrounding us. That the particles in the environment around a person giving out only positive thoughts, and therefore positive vibrations, have an actual effect on the physical world.
They say “where there’s a will, there’s a way”, could this literally mean that if we will something to happen enough then it is actually possible?
Looking at negativity: Negativity breeds negativity – the more negative thought power you give to yourself and others, the more it spreads. Like a disease, negativity – just as positivity can be – is contagious. Those same positive vibrations that can cause knock on effects, if reversed can deliver the opposite kind of result.
Everything breeds. Positive thinking breeds positive reactions. Whether you believe that vibrations and chemistry are affected by our thoughts or not, you cannot negate the fact that when you feel positive, better things come to you. If you smile at a person in the street or serving you in a shop, they are generally inspired to naturally return that smile – thereby directly providing a positive reaction from a positive action. So our mental health can definitely be affected by positive thoughts and actions. Clarity of mind, happiness from within, creates a sound mind and the effect is a healthier body and life.
The power of fear
A huge amount of fear is created from within our own minds. We are on occasion irrational, due to external influences. We may fear for our child’s life if they decide to climb the tree too high, we may have fear of travel as the vehicle is out of our control and in the hands of another. The anxiety caused by worry brought on by fear is one of the ultimate causes of mental and also physical illness.
The power of stress
Stress is a killer: we put ourselves under immense pressure and stress in the modern world. Too much is based upon timing, strict guidelines, deadlines, work hours, overtime, pick up times, meal times, bedtimes, we live by the clock and if we aren’t able to meet a deadline we begin to worry, worry causes stress, stress causes anxiety and anxiety can cause panic. It is one big knock on negative effect. In times like these meditation, breathing exercises, rational thought are all necessary to let go of these feelings and ideas which literally cause us to become mentally and physically unwell.
The power of action
To keep our mind healthy and balanced is just as vital as keeping our body nourished and exercised. The following are all ways in which we can maintain a healthy mind:
Meditate – meditation is key to achieving a healthy mind, connecting to your spiritual consciousness and being at one with your true self.
Breathe – breathing exercises are an amazing way to calm our minds and maintain a healthy balance.
Exercise – necessary for a healthy mind, we must continuously and consistently keep our bodies active and moving every day in order to achieve mental and physical health.
Eat well – you are what you eat, diet directly affects not only your body but also your mind. Your mood, perception, feelings, concentration, etc. are all affected by what you eat.
Sleep – a necessary action for us all. Research shows that eight hours is the minimum requirement per night for a healthy body and mind.
Laugh – it is one of the oldest medicines. A good laugh with a friend can release so much tension, improve your mood and the health of your mind.
Think – to be mindful and use your brain to really think will keep it active and healthy. Philosophise about your true self. Find out who you really are and want to be.
Rest – Make sure to listen to your body and mind, when rest is needed, take it.
Love – Giving love with all your heart provides you with a happy and healthy mind.
Forgive – Relieving your own mind of built up troubles by forgiving others their wrong doings is a powerful tool to keeping your mind healthy.
Trust – Not giving in to fear and trusting the moment keeps your mind free from worry and anxiety.
Release – rid yourself of any demons, anger, aggression and pain and your mind will be a healthier place.
Feel – be aware of the world around you, allow yourself to feel and let things affect you in a positive way.
Declutter – it is proven that if you have an organised environment to live and work in you will have a healthier mind.
Inspire – give inspiration to others, a rewarding and positively influential action for your own mind.
By practicing all of the above and finding your own philosophy on life, you can achieve a peaceful and healthy existence.
